I’m sorry, I didn’t realize we were living in the 19th century, when irrelevant personal details still mattered. Kagan’s marital status and sexuality have no bearing on her ability to serve on our Supreme Court. To say that her sexuality would have a bearing on her ability to impartially judge Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, DOMA, or other LGBT cases is to directly insult her intelligence.

Our society of celebrity idolatry and obsession has created a gestalt where people (who will never have any direct interaction with any of these people, whether they be in Hollywood or the Oval Office) want to know everything from STD histories to bra-size. While we bitch about Facebook eroding our online privacy, we completely ignore the boundaries of privacy in real life. You know. That thing we exist in?
